iPad Academy - Overview

8th Grade Students/Parents 2020-2021

8th Grade students and parents will receive information about the iPad Academy beginning February 24th at the 8th grade parent night at the iPad Academy table, followed by an email from your middle school listserv (which can also be found on this website).

Please do not contact the ANHS Guidance office in advance.

Current ANHS Students

To ALL Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors -

Please fill-in the following survey. It is for ALL freshman, sophomores, and juniors. Whether or not you are already in the iPad Academy, plan on being in the academy next year, or never plan on being in the iPad Academy, you need to take this survey. Please submit the survey by February 11th. (you may edit your answers until March 20)

If you would like to be in the iPad Academy next year, whether or not you are in it this year, there are 4 things you must do:

  1. Fill out the above survey,
  2. Bring 2 copies of the attached Parent Agreement form to the meeting you will have with your Academic Advisor between Feb 10th – March 30th . You will hear more about these meetings in 2 weeks. (read carefully and make sure your parent signs it - 2 copies)
  3. Check the appropriate box for NEW iPad (if you will be new to the iPad Academy NEXT year) or Current iPad (if you are in it this year) at the top of your Parent Agreement form. Both copies - very clearly.
  4. Remind your Academic Advisor to schedule you in iPad classes AND in my 7th period Advisement. (Not a class just a way for me to keep track of iPad Students)

Do not choose iPad courses when you sign up for classes online. Again, you will do that with your Academic Advisor in your meeting with them. Your academic advisor will verify that you have turned in your parent agreement at the meeting before adding those classes.

Please email me if you have any questions. (see P.S. below)

*Please Note - incoming freshman (current 8th graders) have a different survey and a different parent agreement. For more info on the iPad Academy you can visit www.alisoniguel.com/ipadacademy

P.S. Do not email me, or contact your academic advisor, about anything iPad for next year until AFTER the Academic Advisors have explained to you how to enroll in classes on Jan. 29th/30thDO NOT turn forms early.

SUMMER TRAINING

Summer Training UPDATE:

The iPad Summer Training from Monday 8/12/19 - Wednesday 8/14/19 in the ANHS Theater from 9-noon is mandatory for new iPad Sophomores - Seniors and is optional for Freshman although many freshman will opt to do the training.

There is an abbreviated version of the training on Tuesday (8/13/19), from 1-4 in room 707 HOWEVER this training is now for Soph - Seniors ONLY who have ANHS morning commitments. If freshman show-up having not received this email, they will still be turned away even if they received an email previously from me saying it was ok to come. Sounds harsh, I know, and I apologize. I have received too many requests from freshman/parents to be able to accommodate everyone. We simply cannot have every freshman football, softball, volleyball, ASB, and cross country freshman come to that session. 90% of the requests have come in the last 2 weeks and these have been scheduled since June. There are a lot of variables involved  - sports schedules, ASB, family vacations, outside school commitments, etc. and because it is in a regular classroom the max we can have is 40.

Please remember, freshman will receive iPad training in their Biology/Honors Biology classes and are welcome to join us for those 3 days in the morning starting tomorrow.

Some of you will want to immediately hit the reply button (I know, I am usually one of those parents as well - I have a sophomore and a 7th grader) because you were one of those who emailed immediately after they received the email on 6/6/19 and noticed the conflict and I told you about the abbreviated make-up session and you planned all around it. Again I apologize and understand the frustration this may cause but we simply cannot do it. There will not be a sign-up sheet to back-fill the extra spots for freshman.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience -

Erik Silberman

New to the District? "May 29th" Students/Parents ONLY

Welcome to ANHS and thank you for your interest in the iPad Academy.

In order to be apart of the Aliso Niguel iPad Academy for the 2019 - 2020 School year, there are 5 things you need to do:

  1. Fill out the iPad Academy Freshman Interest Survey here (this link is only for new students to the district - do not use another link) https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7VVC6XL
  2. Fill out the follow-up survey to confirm your interest: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/79KFFP2
  3. Download, print, and complete the Freshman iPad Parent Agreement form that you can find on the left side of this web page in the locker.
  4. Write "May 29th Student" on the top of the Parent Agreement form. (it will better help to identify your student so we do not add them to the interdistrict students who have turned their forms in late)
  5. Either bring that form back to ANHS, ASAP, and drop it in the box in the front office reception area, or scan and email back to ebsilberman@capousd.org.

There is a Presentation from a parent information night also posted below on this page.

If you have any questions, please look for answers on this website site. If you cannot find your answer, email ebsilberman@capousd.org.

Looking forward to meeting your student(s) -

- Erik Silberman (iPad Academy Coordinator)

May 14th Parent Meeting

Here is a link to the Prezintation for incoming freshman parents/students if you were not able to attend: May 14th Prezi

A couple questions that were asked afterward:

Q - "So they need a new gmail acount for their Apple ID?"

A - No. Just a new gmail account specific to iPad Academy. They should always use their own personal Apple ID on their devices so you can follow them with ScreenTime.

Q - "Why not another device such as a Microsoft Surface?"

A - Certain Apps are only available on specific devices and we (students/teachers) are the ones who troubleshoot any issues. We simply cannot manage 8 different platforms, each running 4 different operating systems.

Follow-up Survey and Parent Agreement forms have been emailed

If you filled out the Initial Interest Survey by the 3/18/19 due date, you should have received an email with a follow-up survey AND a parent agreement form that are both due by 3/28/19. If you did not receive the follow-up email, please fill out the Initial Interest Survey using the link on the section below.

8th Grade Initial Interest Survey, Now What?

(Please note that some extra info about adding iPad classes - not pertinent to this year - was removed on 2/25/19)

If you have completed the survey for incoming freshman, thank you. If not please complete the survey below in the next post, before you read the rest of this post.

A detailed timeline is 2 headings below.

A few important things to keep in mind:

  • iPad Academy is all or none. You cannot pick and choose which iPad classes your student wants to participate in. However, depending on many factors, your student may get between 2 and 5 iPad classes their freshman year even if they signed up for more.
  • If your student changes their mind on a class they plan to take, please do not fill out a new survey. The classes chosen in the survey give us a preliminary count and has no bearing on the students' schedule.
  • You will get a link to a follow-up survey that you must fill-out in order to be considered for the iPad Academy (see timeline 2 headings below).
  • You will get an iPad Academy Parent Agreement form attached to the email with the follow-up survey, that you must also turn in (see timeline 2 headings below) in order to be in the iPad Academy. Please do not turn it in early - or try to find it on this website - those are for Soph-Seniors.
  • Anything turned in after the due dates, will be considered late and your student will be added to a waiting list.
  • DO NOT purchase an iPad for the iPad Academy until you receive a confirmation notice on the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL. (June 6th, 2019)
  • Despite rumors to the contrary, ALL freshman who turned in everything on-time for the past 7 years have been included in the iPad Academy.
  • First to fill everything out, does not put you in the front of the line. It all depends on the students' schedules, teacher schedules, and the overall school master schedule.

Please look around this page for more information.

One FAQ from the 8th grade information night: (Others you can find in the FAQ section on the left)

We were planning on purchasing an iPad for the program, what do you recommend?

  • It cannot be an iPad Mini.
  • The Parent agreement form will have the minimum requirements for an iPad on it. Some of you will plan it as a 4-year purchase; so something newer as opposed to the minimum requirement (that is already 4 years old). Remember, Apple cycles through their products and this year was the end of updates for the iPad 2 - so Seniors who are still using them can no longer update. Some of you are thinking short term - 1 year - to see if they like it. Use a less expensive model, min. requirement, let them use the iPad Air 2 you already have. Some of you want the best and are willing to re-purchase every year, but you are probably not the ones asking. You do not need an iPad Pro - the newest regular iPad is compatible with the Apple Pencil - about 80% of the 2018-2019 freshman used one. It is fantastic! But now there are other styli that are very similar and can be used with the regular iPad. Research and read/watch reviews. MOST students still do not use the giant iPad Pro - the regular size model is easier to transport - but the kids with the giant size can split the screen into 2 regular sized iPads basically. My kid, who was a freshman in iPad this year, got the regular size wifi only model, and we got her a pencil. We went one step up for the 64gb and have had no space issues. As you can see I am not going to give you an easy answer because there are so many things to consider. Usually it just comes down to a decision based on your budget - but keep in mind that it should be their's, not a family shared item, because they will need it for everything next year.

In order to begin scheduling all 3000 ANHS students for next year's classes including the iPad Academy, we advertised the iPad Academy through 8th Grade parent night, on the front page of the ANHS Website, and through School Messenger and SchoolLoop emails from DJAMS and AVMS for all of February and until March 19th with many reminders to fill-out the Initial Interest Survey which closed on March 19th.

If you did not fill-out the Initial Interest survey by the closing date (3/19/18) please fill it out using the link below. It is still possible to join the iPad Academy and we will email you more information beginning next Monday, 3/26/18. (those who filled in the survey by the 3/19/18 deadline will get an email the previous week)

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZD9QTVB

If you have completed the survey for incoming freshman, thank you. If not please complete the survey below in the next post, before you read the rest of this post.

After completing the survey, and if you would like your student to participate in the iPad Academy for the 2018-2019 school year, you may sign your students into iPad classes through the Aeries Parent Portal as described in last night's 8th grade presentation. We suggest that you search for "iPad" and it will list all of the school's iPad classes. Simply add the iPad versions of the classes that your student should be taking. For example if they are taking English 1, you would choose English 1 iPad. Please note that English 1 will stay on the schedule, along with English 1 iPad, until their Academic Advisor removes the original locked class from the list. (Please note that we will now have the ANHS Academic Advisors schedule your student if you did not read this until after 3/9/18 when the scheduling window was closed for parents - it will not affect your student's placement in iPad Academy classes. Please do not contact them as we will use the Parent Agreement forms/follow-up survey - see below - as verification that you would like your student to participate in the iPad Academy)

Alg 2/Trig Honors does have an iPad Version. Add it with the number i6983. If you cannot find it we will add your student when we look over each schedule.

A few important things to keep in mind.

  • iPad Academy is all or none. You cannot pick and choose which iPad classes your student wants to participate in. However, depending on many factors, your student may get between 2 and 5 iPad classes their freshman year even if they signed up for more.
  • You will get a link to a follow-up survey that you must fill-out in order to be considered for the iPad Academy (in approximately 2 weeks).
  • You will get an iPad Academy Parent Agreement form attached to the email with the follow-up survey, that you must also turn in (Date TBD but before March 30th) in order to be in the iPad Academy. Please do not turn it in early - or try to find it on this website - those are for Soph-Seniors.
  • Anything turned in after March 30th, will be considered late and your student will be added to a waiting list.
  • DO NOT purchase an iPad for the iPad Academy until you receive a confirmation notice on the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL. (June 7th, 2018)
  • Despite rumors to the contrary, ALL freshman who turned in everything on-time for the past 6 years have been included in the iPad Academy.
  • First to fill everything out, does not put you in the front of the line. It all depends on the students' schedules, teacher schedules, and the overall school master schedule.

Summer training for 2017-2018

There will be an iPad training session on August 14-16 from 9am-noon in the ANHS theatre. It is mandatory for NEW sophomores, juniors and seniors so they can catch up to those who are already in the iPad Academy and optional, but highly recommended, for freshman. Even those who are “iPad experts” will learn some tips and tricks for specific apps we use in the academy and will help to start the year off running. It is a 3-day course that builds as we go, so if your students is planning on attending it should be for all 3 days.

There will be an alternate afternoon session on that Tuesday, August 15th, from 1-3 in room 707 for those who have school activities in the morning (cheer, football, etc.) and will cover the basics. Please email me if your student need to attend the afternoon session, space will be limited.

Parent Information Meeting

Here is a link to the Prezintation from the Parent Information Meeting on Tuesday 5/17/2017....

Waiting List has been started

Incoming Freshman Parents - All forms and surveys (2) were due by 4/18/2017. We have now started a waiting list. Getting your forms in on-time did not guarantee a spot, we still need to work with the master schedule to determine how many sections of each iPad class we will be offering, but if you have not turned everything in by Friday, 4/21/17 at 1:30 you will not be included in that first group of students.

Link to Initial Interest Survey - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FHNCTH9 (only for those who have turned nothing in and have not completed any surveys.)

We will have a parent meeting sometime in May - TDB. I will send information to the same email address to which you received the Parent Agreement and the Follow-up Survey.

Incoming Freshman - Timeline

If your student is an incoming freshman - this is what you should expect before the end of this school year:

  1. iPad Academy Interest survey - Opened on February 27. Given out at 8th Grade Parent Night, posted on this website (below) and sent through middle school listservs. Will run for a few weeks to gather information from interested parents.
  2. Follow-up survey - Will come out the Tuesday after Spring break on 4/11/17 and will run for 1 week.
  3. Attached to the email with the follow-up survey will be a *Parent Agreement form that will be Due by NOON on 4/18/17 to a box in the front office of your middle school (DJAMS or AVMS) or to a box in the front office of Aliso Niguel High School.
  4. There will be a parent meeting for those who have turned in both surveys and their parent agreement form around the first week in May. Date TBD.
  5. Parents will be notified on June 1, 2017 (the very last day of school around 3:00 pm) if their students were excepted into the program based solely on turning materials in on-time (earlier does not put you first - late gets you on a waiting list) and the availability of classes that fit your student's schedule and the school's master schedule.

* Please note that it is different than the Soph-Senior Parent Agreement form and will be available in the email explained above but not before.

For CURRENT ANHS students - a LoopMail was sent out on 1/31/2017 explaining what you need to do to join/continue the iPad Academy next year including:

  1. Filling out the survey attached to your LoopMail
  2. Writing iPad (NEW or CURRENT) at the top of your registration forms, and
  3. Attaching 2 copies of the 2017-2018 Parent Agreement to the back of your registration form.

For INCOMING students (current 8th graders OR new ANHS Soph-Seniors) look for a link to a survey in a listserv (or on this website)  during the week of 2/27/17 or in a flier that you will get at 8th Grade Parent Night at ANHS on 2/27/17. More details will be included in that listserv and we will have iPad students at the parent night to answer questions. You must fill-out that initial survey in order to be in the list to receive follow-up information.

***Our guidance department will not be able to answer any questions concerning the iPad Academy for INCOMING students until after March 24th. Please refer to this website for any information you need until then. Erik Silberman (self-appointed iPad Academy coordinator) will be getting information and the surveys out through the middle school listserv and this website.

Summer Training Dates for iPad - 2016

There will be an iPad training session on August 3rd -5th from 9-12 in the ANHS theatre. If you know that your student has a scheduling conflict (some sports, cheer, etc. meet at the same time) please notify me as soon as possible. I may be able to schedule an alternative afternoon session. It is a 3-day course that builds as we go, so if your students is planning on coming it should be for all 3 days.

Summer Training Dates for iPad - 2015

 - The mandatory training for NEW Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will be on August 12-14 in the ANHS theater from 9am - 12pm. It is optional for freshman.

The training builds from day 1 to day 3 and it is expected that students participate all 3 days.

Biology/Honors Biology Survey Sent Out

HONORS BIOLOGY CANCELED AT ALL CUSD SCHOOLS FOR 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR

(below is outdated information but left as a reference.)

We just sent out a Biology Survey to the incoming iPad Freshman parents. If you did not fill-out the survey yet, please click on it below.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XPBFRRH

I have received many questions in the last 2 hours so instead of responding to each I will list some of them here:

  • Will there be summer work for honors biology? Because the majority of the course will be developed over the summer we do not plan on giving out summer work this year.
  • Will choosing regular Biology or Honors Biology have an effect on my student being in the iPad Academy? No. We would just like to adjust the numbers for class size purposes.
  • Are there course descriptions available yet for both courses?  No. We just received this news on 5/14  and it takes some time to develop a course. There will be a district meeting this summer to determine the Honors course, and the regular Biology course will be an easier version of what we teach now.
  • Is Honors Biology similar to the rigor of the current Biology class, or more rigorous? Adding to the above answer, Yes it will be similar to the current rigor and maybe a little more rigorous. Expectations will be higher and content will go a little deeper.
  • Will students who take Honors Biology receive a grade boost for their GPA? Yes and No. Yes for the school’s GPA calculation but No for UCs, Cal States, and many other colleges who do not give any freshman class a weighted grade for GPA calculations.

Please keep in mind that that the decision should be made based on whether the student can not only handle the rigor of the course but also be excited about the content. It should not be made based on the grade boost or lack of summer homework.

Parent Meeting - Monday, May 18th

If you missed the Parent Meeting (email sent out on 5/7/15) here is the Prezi that we went through. Please look around this website in the FAQ section if you have any questions or email me if you cannot find the answer. (ebsilberman@capousd.org)

Cox - Innovation in Education Grant Recipient!

Dear Mr. Silberman & Mr. Carter:Cox.jpg

Congratulations! Your 2014-2015 Innovation in Education classroom grant proposal has been selected to receive funding in the amount of $4947.84 for the project:  iPad Academy.

An independent judging panel, consisting of members of the Orange County business and education community, was impressed with your creativity in the classroom and agreed that your project represented the ideals and pillars of the Innovation in Education program in a unique and impactful way.

We truly appreciate the great work you’re doing to educate future generations and look forward to learning more about your mission as we partner in the coming year.

Below this post is information PRIOR to the start of the 2014-2015 School Year

We left the info below as a reference for guidelines, timelines etc. for the next school year. Everything next year is subject to change and may be different from this year....

ANHS Voluntary iPad Academy Summer Training

We will have a mandatory training for NEW Sophomores and Juniors from Wednesday, August 20 - Friday, August 22 in the theater at ANHS. It will go from 9am - 12pm (~3 hrs each day) and will cover many of the apps that will be used in the program and help you catch up to the sophomores/juniors who were in the program last year. Freshman iPad students may also attend. The first day will be an intro to the academy. We will setup accounts for certain apps and go over the basics of those apps. Please TURN OFF any parental controls you may have enabled on your students' iPad so we do not run into app downloading/setup issues. Day 2 will be more practice with those apps, and additional apps, and day 3 will be much more in depth. Many of the new students THINK they are very familiar with the iPad BUT whatever experience they have will not match up to the daily classroom use with specific apps that current iPad students have had. Students should come with their iPad fully charged with Notability and iCab Mobile apps installed, a protective cover, and a stylus if they have one. (I may have extras if they do not have one yet, and you don't have to buy "the best" one - I buy them on eBay in packs of 10 for ~$.28 each with shipping and they work fine for me)

See you in a couple weeks!

(I understand there is a conflict with walkthrough registration on those days. Students should plan getting to school right at 8, or a little before, on their day to ensure they are in the training at 9)

Email was sent out on June 24th.

We are now in the process of scheduling iPad Academy classes for the 2014-2015 school year. We are still accepting surveys and parent agreements and adding those students to a waiting list. If you have already turned in a parent agreement, you will be notified by June 24th about your student's status for next year. If you have not turned in a parent agreement or survey, please read all of the information below then email ebsilberman@capousd.org for more info on the required surveys and parent agreement if you would like your student to participate.

We had an incoming freshman iPad Academy Presentation on May 19th. Here is a link to the Prezi.

Voluntary iPad Academy Pilot/Development Program

What is the Voluntary iPad Academy Pilot/Development Program?

In one word it is an opportunity. It is an opportunity for our school to test the effectiveness of using an iPad (or any slate computer) as an ongoing, take-home, and integral part of a curricular program. It is an opportunity for our students to view and discover the curriculum through a medium which has, or will, become second nature and one in which they will continue to utilize throughout their educational careers as well as help develop a program for future Aliso students. And finally it is a real opportunity to come up with a "proof of concept" for the district so that future funds for technology, including  funds that may be used to replace aging computers, textbook funds, photo copy funds, etc. can be directed towards bulk purchases of iPads that could replace some or all of the aforementioned Items.

Who is involved in the iPad academy?

A core group of motivated teachers under the guidance of school and district administrators will steer the development of the academy with about 110 freshmen (and their parents) in the first year who will take an important role in letting us know what works, what is helpful, and the direction this academy should take in the future. The students will be chosen randomly from those that expressed interest and whose schedules fit the classes (at this time those classes are Biology and English I/English I Acc) that will make up the core of the program. The families involved should understand, and be excited about, the idea of developing such an academy.

In the second year we will expand the program to include Spanish, math courses, and social science, keeping the students who would like to continue (95% of those who started - some transferred schools) and adding almost as many new iPad Academy sophomores. On top of those numbers we will welcome over 100 freshman bringing the total closer to 300 for the 2013-2014 school year.

Why start this academy now?

The state of our economy in California is the worst it has been in years, and public education is being hit especially hard. We had many years in which our school and district received extra funds for technology in the form of Digital High School grants and millions were spent on improving the infrastructure and number of computers on our campus, but those computers are aging, the funds have dried up, and the technology people use on a daily basis has changed. At this point in time it would simply be impossible for our distinct to spend the money it would take to fund the development of an academy such as ours, but we decided that even without the funds it is important to continue to be progressive in our use of technology and be creative while we worked on it. The technology is happening now and we need to get ahead in the development of its use so we can plan for the future.

Will the students in the academy learn more, be expected to do more, get special privileges, etc. compared to their non-academy counterparts?

No. The curriculum will be the same as students would expect to see in the non-academy classes. Although we may discover new ways to use the iPads that we could use in future academy classes, the main objective is to develop an academy that could be used school-wide in the future with iPads purchased by the district which could possibly save the district money.

The following video sums up part of the reason we decided to try the iPad Academy.
