Laguna Niguel’s “Word of the Month” – Art Submission Guidelines
Purpose of this Contest:
The purpose of The City of Laguna Niguel’s “Word of the Month” Art Contest is to promote the visual arts in our city by facilitating a monthly public art exhibit at City Hall featuring family friendly and inspiring artwork created by our residents and students who attend schools within The City of Laguna Niguel or those schools servicing the residents of Laguna Niguel.
The Word of the Month will be announced at the 2nd City Council meeting each month. For the month of January 2018, the word is: “NEW”
One winner in each category will be invited to City Hall to be publicly recognized by The Mayor and City Council with an official certificate. The awards ceremony will take place at the beginning of the second City Council Meeting each month. Categories are described below.
Age & Residency Requirements:
This publicly judged art competition is open to all artists 6 years of age or older who are residents of the City of Laguna Niguel, attend a school within its borders, or attend a school that services the residents of Laguna Niguel. Eligible schools outside city borders include Aliso-Niguel High School, Aliso Viejo Middle School, and Dana Hills High School.
Contestants will be grouped in four categories:
- Elementary: Grades 1 - 5
- Intermediate: Grades 6 - 12
- Adult: Ages 18 – 55
- Classic: Age 55+

Participation is Free!
Judging Criteria:
The artwork will be judged by the general public through a paper ballot process where the art works will be displayed publicly for one week. Winners will be notified by the day before the second City Council Meeting each month.
Submission Deadlines:
Artworks may be submitted up until 4pm January 5, 2018.
Formats & Sizes:
Entries are restricted to the following visual arts categories:
- Paintings (oil, acrylic, water, etc)
- Sketches and drawings (pencil, charcoal, mixed media, etc)
- Photographs
- Sculptures (less than 15” tall & wide)

The Entry Process:
Simply bring your artwork to Laguna Niguel City Hall and leave with city personnel at the lobby desk.

The artist retains all copyrights to their artwork without exception.
Non-exclusive Permissions:
By entering this art competition, you are granting us a non-exclusive perpetual license to reproduce images of your artwork on our art-competition.net website and in our newsletters, and in the marketing of the art competitions to the general public. Artworks will not be used for any other purpose than that which is stated here. All winning entries will be displayed on Laguna Niguel city website. Each entry becomes part of the public, historical / archival online contest catalog. It can be removed at a later date upon request.
