Dear Parents/Guardians:

As a follow up to the April 10 and 12 Teen Driver Safety Presentations, we are providing a schedule of the upcoming presentations hosted by other high schools in the Capistrano District.  In addition, ANHS will have two summer presentation dates available and those dates will be posted in the near future.

 

Remember - each student attending must show their school ID to enter the presentation event . Especially at a school where they are not familiar with your grade level status. Please be prepared so you are not turned away at the door.  You must have a parent/guardian attend the session with the student.   
 

Also, the student will need to keep the certificate of completion received at the end of the presentation. 

The completion certificate will need to be presented to the ANHS discipline secretary when applying for a permit for the 2018-19 school year.

Thursday, July 26, 2018, at San Juan Hills HS at 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Tesoro High School at 6:00 p.m. (The August 16th presentation at Tesoro would be for students interested in Spring 2019 or late parking)

We apologize for failing to update our graduation letter to correctly reflect our district’s recently revised gender-neutral dress code policy.  To clarify, examples of appropriate student attire for the graduation ceremony are collared shirts, ties, dresses, blouses, and dress pants.  Jeans, shorts, hats and flip flops are not appropriate for this occasion.  In addition, spiked/narrow heeled footwear is prohibited, as this type of footwear presents a tripping hazard with artificial turf. Thank you.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS!

Laguna Niguel is sponsoring the June “Word of the Month” art contest.  The word for the month of June is “ACHIEVEMENT.”  All drawing and painting artists, cartoonists, and potters are invited to participate by creating a visual piece of art inspired by the word of the month.  Showcase your artistic talents to the community at Laguna Niguel City Hall.  Winners in each category will be recognized and presented with a certificate from the Mayor and City Council.  Deadline for submittals is June 8, 2019 at 4:00 pm.  Entry form, requirements and more information can be found at www.CityofLagunaNiguel.org

STEM Signing Day at UCI:

Boeing is sponsoring a STEM Signing Day at UCI on June 29th! This is a great opportunity for high school seniors to be recognized as the top STEM talent.

 

What is STEM Signing Day?

Just like signing days for athletes, the inaugural Orange County Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Signing Day on Friday, June 29th, celebrates high school seniors from across the county as they make their commitments to some of the country’s top colleges and universities. These students will be applying their talents in pursuit of careers in STEM fields and putting themselves on the fast track for success.

 

Students will sign STEM Letters of Intent at the University of California, Irvine campus during a ceremony attended by elected officials and business and community leaders. More than 50 students from across the state will be selected through the STEM Premier application process.

 

The deadline is to apply is June 15. See flyer attached on how students can apply. Spread the word!

Attention Seniors,

 

Monday, May 21st if our Senior Field Trip to Disneyland.

 

Buses will be on campus by 8:30am.  You must be in line by 8:15am.  Come early and make sure you participate in the Senior Crush video in the food court before you board the buses. Your senior class Reps have a surprise for you!  

 

Send out a quick "shout out" to your favorite teacher, staff member, admin or campus supervisor....

 

Remember to report to the food court.  Look for your bus assignment.  The lists will be posted on the windows of the food court by 8am. 

 

Reminder:  We will be arriving at the park by 10am and we will be heading back to the school by 9pm.  You will need to be back at the buses by 9pm.  It will be a long day, so rest up this weekend and wear good walking shoes..... We will be back at the school by 10pm.

Attached are the application forms for Student Advisor to the Board.  Please disseminate this information to all current juniors at your school who may be interested in applying for this position.  THE DEADLINE FOR RETURNING THE APPLICATION IS FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2018.  Applicants are encouraged to have attended at least one Board meeting.  The next Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano.

 

Interviews will be held at the District Office on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, beginning at 3:15 p.m.

What is ASB?

 

ASB stands for Associated Student Body. When ASB if referred to, it means the group of students that is selected or elected to represent the entire student body of ANHS.  This is the student government and leadership class of ANHS.  

 

What does ASB do?

 

1. Provides student activities

2. Manages the finances of the student groups on campus

3. Represents the voice of Aliso Niguel High School students to staff, school district, and our community. 

 

What does it take to be on ASB?

 

ASB members must be leaders. The qualities of a good leader includes honesty, trustworthiness, responsibility, reliability, willingness to work hard, humility, respect for both adults and fellow students, and most of all student PRIDE.  The ASB cabinet wants people who take initiative to make a difference and achieve our goals.  You must have at least a 2.5 GPA, be in good academic standing, and maintain high academic and personal standards, both on and off campus.

Please see the following request from Laguna Niguel Parks and Recreation and Crown Valley Park:

 

In previous years on Prom night, Crown Valley Park has experienced a few issues which have generated complaints and put a strain on valuable community resources:

 

  • Buses and cars filled with dance attendees and their parents have congested the Crown Valley Park parking lot, to the point where people have actually parked in the middle of the street and blocked traffic.  This not only impacts the patrons attending the pool and YMCA, it also compromises the safety of students and patrons. We have notified the Sheriff’s Dept. of the event dates and they will do their best to monitor the situation, however, our hope is that students and parents will be respectful of the laws and not take away Sheriff’s support from the streets.

       

  • An overabundance of trash (corsage boxes, food wrappers, water bottles, etc.) has also been left in the Park. We respectfully request that all patrons leave the parks as they found them and use designated trash containers, or take trash with them.   
  • City parks provide a great photography opportunity for small groups and individuals, but if professional photographers, and/or large groups are planning to coordinate pictures, a permit is required so we can ensure that all rules and safety standards are being followed and the Park can operate normally. 

 

We appreciate that people want to utilize our beautiful parks to take pictures on their special day. We sincerely hope that the students and parents will be cooperative and take responsibility for their actions so that we don’t have to initiate restrictions on these activities in the future.  Thank you for your assistance.

FREE Teen Driving Safety Program

REQUIRED FOR STUDENT PARKING in 2018-19

Dear Wolverine Students and Parents/Guardians:
 

Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, Aliso Niguel will join the other six CUSD high schools in

requiring completion of a FREE Teen Driving Safety Program as part of the eligibility requirements for

a campus parking permit. The one-hour program will be hosted by ANHS PTSA and held on the

Aliso Niguel campus during multiple spring and summer dates, as well as at other high school

sites within the Capistrano Unified School District.  Students who plan to apply for parking will be

required to attend this one-hour class with at least one parent/guardian; the program will

present the importance of safe driving and the effects on student and public safety. 

Dates and Key Information:

  • Student and at least one parent/guardian must attend together.
  • Spring presentation dates are: April 10 or 12, 2018 (attend one only; not both).
  • The program is FREE.  No pre-registration or RSVP is required.
  • Presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. sharp (one hour); student and parent must both arrive
    before 6:30 pm – no late entries.
  • Presentation location: ANHS Gym
  • Presenter:  Impact Teen Driving – sponsored by ANHS PTSA
  • Students must bring their ID cards to be scanned upon admittance.
  • Certificate of completion is awarded at the end of the one-hour session.
  • The certificate of completion must be presented when applying for a parking permit
    but does NOT guarantee issuance of a parking permit (see note below *).
  • Students and parents can attend the program at other CUSD high schools if the ANHS dates
    are inconvenient.
  • One-time completion of this program is good for all years of attendance at ANHS.
  • Additional summer presentation dates will be announced in late spring.

*IMPORTANT NOTECompletion of the program does NOT guarantee a parking permit
There are other eligibility factors, and parking spaces are limited. In order to encourage

good habits, students will be ineligible to purchase a parking permit if any of the following apply:

  1. Seven or more tardies to any one class during the Spring 2018 semester.
  2. A total of five periods of truancy to any class or combination of classes during the
    Spring 2018 semester.
  3. One or more F grades on the Spring 2018 semester report card.
  4. Outstanding discipline consequences (no-shows) at the end of the Spring 2018 Semester
  5. Step 2 or above on behavior contract.

Please read the following information regarding opportunities for students to become involved in the Student Poll Worker Program on June 5th.  Please NOTE: June 5th is also a day of Final Exams. Participating students must schedule their poll work hours for a time AFTER their final exams.

 

Student Poll Workers:

The Office of the Registrar of Voters is preparing for the Statewide Direct Primary Election on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. The Student Poll Worker Program has become vital to the election process. High school students have a unique educational opportunity to volunteer as poll workers on Election Day and learn firsthand about the electoral process. With the support of educators and school administrators, we can continue to make the program a success by increasing school and student participation.

 

Student Poll Workers receive a paid stipend of $120!

 

Student Poll Worker Qualifications:

U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident by Election Day

Minimum age of 16 years old by Election Day

Currently enrolled as a high school student

Good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5

Have permission from a parent/guardian and high school

 

We have mailed informational packets about the Student Poll Worker Program to your office and high schools throughout the county. Please encourage high school administrators and faculty to share information about the Student Poll Worker Program with students. For more information about the program, please visit https://www.ocvote.com/volunteer/student-poll-worker-program/. Also, we can arrange to offer on campus training if more than 25 students from a high school apply (space is limited).

ANHS Alum Kathryn Plummer Profile:

Plummer was perhaps the most decorated women’s volleyball player of the 2017 collegiate regular season. She earned Player of the Year honors from both AVCA and espnW. She was named Pac-12 Player of the Year, AVCA All-North Region Player of the Year and became a Honda Award nominee. On the beach, Plummer was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Pac-12 All Conference first team and Pac-12 All Conference freshman team.

Seal of Biliteracy – Smarter Balanced Assessment – Please note: A district letter was sent to all families of current eleventh grade students regarding the state Seal of Biliteracy. It notified students and parents of the change to the Education Code, which requires that all students who want to receive the Seal of Biliteracy must have taken the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) for English Language Arts during the spring testing of their junior year. Dear CUSD Staff, Families, and Students,

The tragic event that transpired in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, has left a deep and significant impact on our nation, including our very own students. Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones and peers whose lives will be forever changed. These events spurred many emotions, conversations, and debates associated with the incident, prompting many forms of public action.  

We have listened to the voices of our students, our principals and our parents. Many students have reached out to their principals and teachers with the desire to participate in upcoming events including the March 14, 10 a.m. nationwide walkout.  While CUSD supports the rights of our students to express their beliefs under the state and federal First Amendment rights, as a District we are not sponsoring or advocating any participation in demonstrations. Supporting the remarks by the California State PTA “care must be taken to ensure that orderly operation of the school is not disrupted and the physical safety of students is not threatened.”  We have all agreed that our focus will remain on instruction and learning and to keep students safe in classrooms.

 

If students walk out of their classrooms or the school, we will supervise and will work with our campuses to strongly encourage that these activities take place in the safest locations possible. Because this is a highly publicized known day to strangers, we continue to reinforce that the safest place to be is in the classroom.  We do not encourage students to congregate in open areas putting themselves at risk and we expect our students to follow the guidance of our principals and staff to ensure safety. In accordance with state law, we will not discipline students who choose to assemble, provided they adhere to District and school guidelines including, but not limited to:

  • All activities must be peaceful and respectful
  • At no time may students leave the campus

Additionally, a student may be marked truant if they do not return to the classroom or if they leave the campus.

 

We continue to encourage parents to have a conversation with their students and to make their own expectations clear about participating in student demonstrations and these non-school- sponsored activities.  Principals and school staff who have been approached by students should continue to talk with them about this matter and maintain open lines of communication with parents.

 

To further support a safe campus environment, outside groups, parents/guardians, and other individuals who do not have official school business will not be allowed on campus to participate in the walkouts. As part of our normal operations, anyone visiting school campuses for school-related matters or for volunteer work must check in with the front office.

 

We are committed to the safety of all of our students and desire to assure staff, families, and students that our site staff will work tirelessly to create positive, supportive learning environment on all of our campuses in the event of any student demonstrations.

Our priority is student learning and safety. What we expect this month from our students will ensure that our students understand future expectations, as many other walkouts are being planned nationally.

Parent and Guardian of English Language Learners - Notification Letter

 

Dear Parent/Guardians of English Language Learners:

Identifying students who need help learning English is important so these students can get the support they need to do well in English language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, and other subject areas in school. The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “ELPAC,” are the tests used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.

This spring, your child will take the following test:  ELPAC Summative Assessment

 

About the ELPAC - Students in kindergarten through grade twelve, who are classified as English learners, will take the ELPAC Summative Assessment every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Students are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

To learn more about the ELPAC, please read the Parent Guide to Understanding the ELPAC, which can be found on the CDE Parent Guide to Understanding the ELPAC Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ep/documents/elpacparentguide.pdf.

 

The ELPAC practice tests are another good resource. They can be found on the ELPAC Web site at https://www.elpac.org, where parents and students can see the kinds of questions that will be on the test.

How can I help my child get ready for the ELPAC?

You are an important part of your child’s education. Some things you can do to help your child are:

  • Read to your child or have your child read to you on a regular basis.
  • Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what he or she sees, or what is happening in each picture.
  • Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.
  • Talk to your child’s teacher about his or her listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help support your child’s progress.

ATTENTION:. The tournament will consist of 32 teams. The teams that will be playing are on a first come first serve basis and their forms completely filled out. After 32 completed forms are turned in, we will place the remaining teams on a waiting list to play. You are NOT allowed to have a Coach on the court unless that team member is your alternate and still have to have all the same paperwork filled out.

Senior Disney Trip Tickets NOW ON SALE!!!!
 

Tickets are $140 with ASB  $150 without.  All Tickets are Park Hooper Tickets. Transportation for park pass holders is $15.
 

Monday May 21st, 2018.   Please plan to arrive at 8:15 am in front of the main gym.  Buses will depart at  9:00 am. Buses will arrive back to School at 10:00 pm.
 

Bus transportation is included.  If you already have a pass Transportation is only $15. This is a school sponsored field trip and everyone is required to ride the bus.
 

Tickets may be purchased online or from the Activities window during the posted hours. 
 

When you purchase your Disneyland ticket or transportation (for those that have a Disney pass) you will need to pick a bus number 1 through 9.  Once you pick a bus that will be your assigned bus no switching.  If you want to ride with your friends be sure and know what bus number they are on or just purchase together.  

 

Activities window hours are:  Before school (7:30am to 8:00am), Lunch and after school until 3pm.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

This Spring, our students will be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). CAASPP is the State’s academic testing program and includes the computer-adaptive Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), California Alternate Assessment (CAA), and the new California Science Test (CAST). The CAA is designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities while ensuring they still attain increasingly higher achievement levels and leave high school ready for academic or career options. These assessments provide information that can be used to monitor student progress on an annual basis and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and career.

Students in grades 3-8 and 11 will take the SBA or CAA. Additionally, students in grade 5, 8, and 12 will take the CAST. Our school is still finalizing the specific testing window and will provide those dates as soon as they have been determined.

 

Should you wish to provide opportunities for your child to practice these tests prior to the actual administration they can be found at this link: http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html by clicking on Student Interface Practice and Training Tests. Additional resources for parents are available through the California Department of Education (http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/), the California PTA (http://capta.org/focus-areas/education/student-assessments/), and Capistrano USD (http://capousd.ca.schoolloop.com/CAASPPforParents).

This year, in addition to receiving results in English Language Arts and Mathematics, students in grades 5, 8, and 12 may also receive results in Science. CAST is in its second year of administration and is considered a field test. This means that while some form of scores will be provided, students, parents, and educators should exercise caution when interpreting these results. School and District staff will use the CAST results appropriately based on guidance from the State. As always, State testing results are only one indicator of student performance as the District routinely uses other data points to guide instruction throughout the year. All results will be mailed home and made available through Aeries Parent Portal in Fall 2018.

Staff is here to support parents and students. Counselors are available to alleviate testing anxiety students may experience. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Guidance Office with any questions or concerns.

Participation in the 2017-2018 Physical Fitness Test

 

 

Dear CUSD Parent or Guardian:

 

 

During Spring 2018 our students in grades five, seven, and nine will participate in the California Physical Fitness Test (PFT). The annual PFT is required for students in California public schools. This health-related fitness test is intended to help students acquire lasting habits of regular physical activity.

 

The PFT includes tests for six areas of fitness, including Aerobic Capacity, Body Composition, Abdominal Strength and Endurance, Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility, Upper Body Strength and Endurance, and Flexibility. There are two or three test options for most of the fitness areas so that all students, including those with special needs, have the chance to participate in the PFT.

 

For each fitness area, a student’s performance is classified into the Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) or into other zones. The desired performance goal for each test is the HFZ, which indicates a level of fitness that offers some protection against diseases related to physical inactivity.

 

Students and parents can access the PFT results through the Aeries Portal and the results will be mailed to the home address of the student in the fall of 2018. These results will help students understand their individual levels of fitness. Students are encouraged to talk about these results with their parents or guardians and their physical education teacher. Parents and guardians can use these results to help their children plan appropriate fitness activities.

The Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation (EI) Summer Program at Cal State Fullerton is looking for motivated students interested in learning more about a career in engineering!  The Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation Summer Program is an exciting college-level summer program for motivated high school students with math and science aptitudes and an interest in or curiosity about engineering.  This experience is equivalent to a college semester-long course condensed into 4 weeks where students learn to think and problem-solve like an engineer.  Students will complete lab activities in computer engineering, chemical engineering, electrical/computer engineering, materials science, civil, and mechanical engineering.  They also prepare a presentation in response to a Request for Proposal, learn about engineering economics, write a research paper, build a spaghetti bridge, and have the opportunity to earn college credit. 

Through EI, students apply their knowledge of math and science to labs and hands-on projects, and concepts they’ve learned in high school are linked to real-world practice. Students’ confidence grows as they attend college-level lectures, tackle problems, test theories, and ultimately learn to think like engineers.  Of our EI alumni, 85% have gone on to major in engineering.

Saturday, February 17th a funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, address 27231 Aliso Viejo Pkwy, Aliso Viejo.  Aliso Niguel families and students are welcome to attend.  This will be a full funeral mass followed by a reception.

The following information and attached flyer have been provided by UCI for high school students who may be interested in a unique summer program:

 

The 2018 Summer Surgery Program offers two, two-week intense sessions for mature high school students who are at least 16 years old, have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and are currently enrolled in high school (2018 graduates are welcome to apply).

 

The dates for each session:

Session I: July 9th – July 20th  
Session II: July 23rd – August 3rd (room and board available)

 

The application process is currently open – don’t wait!

Talented high school students, who qualify for our program, will have the opportunity to:

  • Observe live surgical cases
  • Gain hands-on experience with our state-of-the-art da Vinci robot
  • Learn actual surgical skills in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery through surgical skills workshops
  • Become proficient and certified in Basic Life Support training and CPR
  • Work in the UC Irvine Medical Education Simulation Center, a four-story center that includes a full-scale operating room, emergency room trauma bay, obstetrics suite and critical care unit
  • Perform in-depth fetal pig dissection with an emphasis on the types of surgical cases the students will see in the operating room
  • Interact and learn with a highly motivated team of surgical faculty, medical students and undergraduate students at all levels of training.

 

Tuition for the Summer Surgery Program is:

Session 1: July 9th – July 20th 

Cost: $4,550 per student

 

Session 2: July 23rd – August 3rd

Cost: $4,550 per student

Cost: $5,850 per student (with room and board)

Winter Formal "Winter Ball 2018" is this Saturday, Feb 3rd, 2018

Doors open at 7pm and the dance ends at 10pm.  See a few reminders below:

 

Reminders

 

 

Students Attending Winter Formal

  • ANHS students must have their student ID, this is their ticket in.  All guests should have their picture school ID or driver’s license.
     
  • The venue address is: Yost Theater – 307 N. Spurgeon Street  – Santa Ana, CA  - Directions on school’s web site (see attached map)
     
  • Students that will be self-parking will need to pay for parking.  The nearby parking structure is $4 for the night and there is street parking by meter.
     
  • Reminders for all students and parents:  At approximately 8:45pm once all the students that are scanned into the dance, a list will be generated with any students that purchased a ticket but did not show up at the entrance for scanning.  The parents will be notified by phone that the student did not come to the dance.  Please let us know if your student is not planning on coming to the dance because of illness, family event, etc. by 4pm on Friday, Feb 2nd.  If you find out last minute please email Ann Zendner aczendner@capousd.org  with your information so I can call to verify the student will not be showing.

 

Winter Formal Reminders

  • Dance hours are 7pm to 10pm.  Students must check in by 8:30pm to be admitted into the dance, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Activities Director, Ann Zendner.
  • No student will be allowed to leave the dance until 9:30pm, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Activities Director.
  • NO GUM is allowed at this venue, there will be a bag and pocket search before entering the dance.
  • Boys: you are not required to wear a tux, a jacket or sports coat is appropriate, however, a long-sleeved shirt with collar and tie is recommended.
  • There will be a bag/coat check to secure items at no charge.
  • Light snacks and beverages will be available at no charge for all students.
  • Photography will be available at no cost. 
  • ANHS administration will be breathalyzing all students at the entrance to the dance.  Any student testing positive for alcohol will be directed to administration for further analysis.  This procedure serves as a deterrent to student drinking and empowers students with an additional tool to make the right choices.
  • Please make sure you follow the dance guidelines and dress code that is on the activities dance contract both student and parent signed at the beginning of the school year. 

 

Students that have purchased a ticket and will be riding the ALISO CHARTER BUS :

 

  • You must be in front of the school by 6:00pm for check in.  The bus will be leaving at 6:15pm. You will be checked in and when you arrive at the venue.....no waiting in line, just walk right in and start enjoying the dance.
  • 10:00pm is your check in time, all students must return on the bus unless prior arrangements have been made with the Activities Director. Students report to the front entrance and wait for the bus.
  • No ticket is necessary or receipt, we have your name on a list from your purchase.  If purchased a ticket and you are not going on the bus, please let us know so we are not waiting for you.
  • The charter bus will return to Aliso Niguel High School by 10:45pm for parents to pick up.  Please be on time, adult supervision will need to leave by 11:00pm
     
  • You must wear shoes at all times!  Ladies, if your shoes are uncomfortable to dance in, bring sneakers or flip flops to change into. Coat check will not accept shoes unless you have another pair of shoes to wear during the dance.
     
  • Avoid lost items and theft.  Do not bring valuables or large amounts of money to the dance. There will be coat/bag check available at no charge to secure your items.
     
  • Students are not allowed to have more than 40 people in a vehicle (limo/limo bus). If you have more than 12 students in any vehicle, you must provide a passenger list and submit to Mr. Brosamer before the dance. Transportation contract online…..all on bus must sign. Make a copy of the form for the AP when you depart from the bus. 

 

 

Parking at venue (street or structure)  is $4.00 for the night.

The bus will depart from the Aliso Niguel Parking Lot at 6:15pm and once you arrive at the Yost Theater you will walk past the line and into the venue. 

 

You will need the attached permission slip for each person and the price is $20.00 round trip.

 

Bring your student ID card to the Activities window before school, lunch or after school to purchase your bus ticket.  

 

Seating is limited to 50 seats, so don't wait.

Hello, my name is Gabrielle Bartolon, and I am a member of the Girls in Ocean Science Teen Conference Committee.

 

The Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California, will host the 13th Annual Girls in Ocean Science Teen Conferences for Middle School students on February 24th, 2018 and for High School students on March 17th, 2018. Our mission is to provide an environment that encourages dialogue between one hundred young women and eight influential scientists at each conference. The focus of the conference is to promote teenage girls' interest in science through interactive workshops based in our onshore laboratory facility and aboard our research vessel, the R/V Sea Explorer. Because women are still largely underrepresented in many fields of science, we will be encouraging these young women to consider pursuing science-based fields of study.  Our mission is to demonstrate the success and excitement available to women who pursue scientific careers.

 

The success of these conferences depends on participation of local middle school and high school girls. We believe that many young girls in your district would benefit greatly from this opportunity. We are looking for girls between 5th and 12th grade who are interested in science and would enjoy spending a day engaging with inspiring female scientists and other like-minded students. Our scientists come from many different fields of science, including a nautical archaeologist, veterinary technician, geochemist, sustainable seafood scientist, climatologist, and conservationists. Our hope is that the participants will walk away with a new-found passion for all that the field of science has to offer. Attached to this email you will find a flyer with all essential information regarding the conferences. The conferences run from 8:30am to 4:00pm, with breakfast and lunch provided. We will also be providing t-shirts and fun raffle prizes. The cost is $50 per person, and the girls can sign up online at the ocean institute website. Laguna Niguel’s “Word of the Month” – Art Submission Guidelines

 

Purpose of this Contest:
The purpose of The City of Laguna Niguel’s “Word of the Month” Art Contest is to promote the visual arts in our city by facilitating a monthly public art exhibit at City Hall featuring family friendly and inspiring artwork created by our residents and students who attend schools within The City of Laguna Niguel or those schools servicing the residents of Laguna Niguel.

The Word of the Month will be announced at the 2nd City Council meeting each month. For the month of January 2018, the word is: “NEW”

One winner in each category will be invited to City Hall to be publicly recognized by The Mayor and City Council with an official certificate. The awards ceremony will take place at the beginning of the second City Council Meeting each month. Categories are described below.

Age & Residency Requirements:
This publicly judged art competition is open to all artists 6 years of age or older who are residents of the City of Laguna Niguel, attend a school within its borders, or attend a school that services the residents of Laguna Niguel. Eligible schools outside city borders include Aliso-Niguel High School, Aliso Viejo Middle School, and Dana Hills High School.

Contestants will be grouped in four categories:

  • Elementary: Grades 1 - 5
  • Intermediate: Grades 6 - 12
  • Adult: Ages 18 – 55
  • Classic: Age 55+

Participation is Free!

Judging Criteria:

The artwork will be judged by the general public through a paper ballot process where the art works will be displayed publicly for one week. Winners will be notified by the day before the second City Council Meeting each month.

Submission Deadlines:
Artworks may be submitted up until 4pm January 5, 2018.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program is accepting applications for the 2018 Student Leaders® program.  

 

Since its inception in 2005, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,500 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities.  The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:

 

A summer eight-week paid internship with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization.

 

The week-long, all-expense paid Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 8-13, 2018. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.

Pep Squad competed in the USA Holiday Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday, December 2, 2017.  All four teams did an amazing job in their divisions earning each team a qualification into USA Nationals that will take place in 2018.  Three of the teams placed in the top 3:

On Saturday, November 18th at Colony HS in Ontario, our very own ANHS Marching Band, Drum Line and Color Guard, once again won 1st place at the SCSBOA Marching Band Championships.    Our band earned the highest score every achieved in the 3A divisions history as well as winning BACK TO BACK Championships.

 

We also concluded our season UNDEFEATED, winning six contests in a row!  Again, this is the second year this has occurred as well.

Attention Class of 2018

Graduation is right around the corner and it is time to start thinking about what you will wear to your High School Graduation. Also, Check out the exclusive graduation announcement designed for your class by your representatives, Madelyn Brauer and Sophia Encinas.  

Creative Forms Designs Representative (Nancy Bixler) will be on campus will be on campus again on January 9th and 10th at lunch by flagpole.  In the meantime you can mail your form to the address on form or you can call Creative Forms directly and order over the phone call  (714) 437-0100.


You can pay by cash, check (make payable to Creative Design) or Credit card (follow directions on the form).  Don't forget to add the column with tax and handling.  

 

Cap and Gown order forms are now available.  You would of received a packet in your Senior American Government class or Senior Economic Class.  

 

Please see attached form if you need one.  Everyone needs to have a form turned in, even if you are borrowing one from a sibling or friend.  Please mark the form (Borrowing from family/friend) write on top of form. This is so we know you have one and will not need to acquire one for you. 
 

We also have caps and gowns available for loan, just check the box and give your size so we have one available for you.  The cap and gown will need to be returned after the ceremony if you borrow from ANHS.

We are still going....so please read below

 

If you are joining us for the Knott's Berry Farm Senior Trip tomorrow here are the details,

 

First.... This is going to be a  FUN day....just want to make sure you all understand..............................

 

Knott’s is very strict and they kick kids out of the park all the time for the things below and if you get kicked out your parent will have to come get you! They have a holding cell at the city hall (big room with no cell service) you will have to wait in until a parent/guardian comes to get you...and then you will have that awkward moment in the AP's office the next day with possible restriction from games, dances, etc.   So BEHAVE! 

 

They will not tolerant the following things:

 

·         Line jumping or saving places in line

·         Profanity

·         Vandalism

·         Fighting

·         Alcohol/Drug possession (including smoking)

 

No outside food is allowed in the park.  They will be checking bags at the gate, so don't bring food, however, light snacks like a protein bar and unopened bottle of water will be fine.  You can bring a water bottle to fill at the park.

 

Meet at school at 8am...park and then head to the area where your bus number is.  Buses 1 to 9 signs will be out by the curb in front of gym.  WE will be rolling out by 8:30ish so don't be late!  It is late start tomorrow so traffic will be heavy by 8:15am.....get here early.

 

Chaperones will be in the park.  There will be an adult stationed at the "Ghost Town Grill" every hour we are in the park, so if you need anything you can go there to talk with the chaperone. 

 

If you have made arrangements with Me (Mrs. Zendner) to leave early with a parent/guardian from the park due to work, doctor apt, or meetings.... I have already noted this on the sheets for each bus. 

 

It is important to remember..... you are NOT allowed to leave the park, or leave without letting one of our adult chaperones know.  We don't want to be waiting on you and make everyone else wait if you left with a parent and didn't tell us. 

 

You all will head back to the buses by 5:30pm for a roll call and roll out by 6pm....we will arrive back at ALISO parking lot by 7pm.

 

 

There will be many other schools from our area at the park, please be nice and represent ALISO with pride and integrity.  I am depending on all of you being the best you can be!  Have fun and make memories with your friends and classmates.

Good Morning –

 

The Orange County Fire Authority, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and the American Red Cross are recruiting student volunteers for a smoke alarm event in Aliso Viejo on Saturday, October 21.

 

Students will be included on teams with firefighters, Red Cross partners, and community volunteers and will assist as we install free smoke alarms and provide residents with fire safety information. Teens at least 14 years of age are welcome to join us but must bring a copy of the attached waiver, signed by a parent or guardian, the morning of the event. Saturday events generally last from 8AM to 2PM and lunch is provided.

 

Because of the type of outreach involved, this event is a great opportunity for students to earn volunteer hours while making a real difference in their community. They may even be responsible for saving a life!
